A REPORT ON THE International Cities of Peace, ICP, Ajah, Lagos EVENT –Titled Project IMPACT, coordinated by Barrister Uduak Udofia of LAWFORTE ASSOCIATES (LEX LAUREL CHAMBERS), LAGOS, NIGERIA
It was held on 14th December 2017. The theme of the event was, “Mentor a Child or Teen, Build the Future.” Project Impact was conceived as a medium for providing mentors for the children of the orphanage especially now that most of them are now teenagers and young adults to ensure that they grow up into responsible adults and not become a problem to the society, consequently building a peaceful, safe and healthy society.
This initiative is in partnership with Mercy and Love Orphanage, Lagos -A collaboration that is five years still waxing stronger after an earlier partnership with RACO Orphanage Home in Lagos between 2010 and 2014.
On the D-day of the event, the children from the orphanage numbering eighteen (18) arrived the premises of Genesis Deluxe Cinema, Sangotedo, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria at a little past 10 am. The children were ushered into the cinema hall to watch a film titled, “Paddington” and given popcorn and drinks to savour the moment. At the end of the film, the children moved to Panarotis, an eatery sharing the same premises with Genesis Deluxe Cinema for breakfast. While waiting to be served with lunch, friends and members of the Firm of good standing interacted with the children as a prelude to what lay in store for them after their meal.
Syndicate sessions came on the heels of the breakfast. The children were divided into groups depending on their age range. We had facilitators who were on hand to engage the children. Some of our facilitators were Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Ishomo, a certified John Maxwell coach; Mrs. Juliet Amarie, a sociologist; and the Coordinator of ICP, Ajah and principal of Lex Laurel, Barr. (Mrs.) Uduak Udofia. Together, the facilitators discussed issues of sex and sexuality; nutrition; goal-setting and goal attainment; and spirituality. Pizza and drinks were on hand to add spice to the fun-learning atmosphere as well.
The children were excited to be in a place where fun and learning converged pleasantly; lots of pictures were taken, too. We give God Almighty the glory, for making this possible by making us able to gather the children for a value-adding event such as this. We also have to thank the founder and manager of the Mercy and Love Orphanage, Mr. Dominic Ajefu and his team for their unparalleled love, commitment, and honesty to his dream of taking care of the less privileged. It is a vision that has spanned ten (10) years.
